Sunderland’s miraculous run of results continued on Saturday as they extended their success to seven wins in nine games.
Phil Parkinson’s men have lost just one of their previous 13 matches and a large part of that has been down to the formidable defence.
The arrival of Bailey Wright has worked a treat and since he came in, the Black Cats have conceded only two strikes in five outings.
However, another reason for that has been goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin who has overseen seven clean sheets in his last eight appearances.
It’s been an excellent run of form and one he earned praise for at the weekend on Twitter. However, there was one clear message – Sunderland fans wanted him tied down to a new deal.
It was a loud demand from the supporters at the Stadium of Light who were seemingly frustrated that he hadn’t been given fresh terms.
The goalkeeper’s current deal expires at the end of the season and his recent form suggests he’d be a huge loss if he walked through the door after a successful season between the sticks.
In all competitions this term, McLaughlin has conceded 25 times in 30 outings. However, it’s his recent form that speaks volumes. No team in the top four English teams have recorded more shut outs than Sunderland have in 2020. Calls for him to be given whatever he wants, therefore, are viable ones.
Further supporters made reference to the fact he could leave for free in the summer as one fan suggested it would be rather typical of Sunderland to let that happen.
Speaking about talks last week, Parkinson noted: “Jon is someone we would like to keep. He is performing well but he has to keep his standards high and when the chairman is ready he will deal with that situation.”
Given his form this year, it would be rather disastrous if they weren’t even able to command a fee for his services.
One final individual decided to take fire at the club’s owner Stewart Donald. The businessman has taken flack in the past and a lack of positive movement to tie the 6 foot 3 goalkeeper down is alarming.
In an interview at the beginning of January, the 32-year-old had the following to say: “From my side, we have no idea [where the contract talks are at] and we have no control over that.
“At the start of the summer it looked very positive. It looked like they really wanted to get something done but it’s gone very quiet very quickly.”Life after football: Do you know what all of these former players did next?Criticism of Donald, therefore, is completely understandable. McLaughlin has established himself as one of the main pillars of Parkinson’s side but if they aren’t careful, he’ll be walking through the exit door in a matter of months.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/eathummous1/status/1229311533617950720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw[/EMBED_TWITTER]In other Mackems news, George Dobson sent a CHEEKY message to Jordan Willis on Instagram…
