Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with his side’s 5-0 win over Wigan on Boxing Day, especially given the injuries to key players in his squad.
A Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick and goals from Ji-Sung Park and Antonio Valencia ensured that it was an easy day for the Premier League champions, despite a number of fringe players being called into action.
Ferguson has admitted that he is happy with the performance, which draws his team level on 45 points with cross-town rivals Manchester City.
“The result pleases me considering the injuries we’ve had,” he told Sky Sports.
“We had ten players missing today and then Jonny Evans is taken off at half-time which – if it had been a closer game – we’d have worried about that because we ended up with a back four that has never in its life played together.
“So we’re very pleased in getting a result like that.
“As I say, we get to the start of the year, if we’re joint with City, I’ll be happy with that,” he concluded.
Evans is likely to be on the sidelines for two weeks after picking up a calf injury, and United finish 2011 with a fixture against Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday.
