Norwich City boss Chris Hughton was left thinking of what could have been after losing 4-0 to Manchester United on Tuesday night.
The Canaries were knocked out of the Capital One Cup after Javier Hernandez (2), Phil Jones and Fabio all scored to book United’s place in the fifth round of the tournament.
There are concerns for Hughton over the fitness of Robert Snodgrass, who was taken to hospital with concussion. But after confirming the club will monitor the midfielder’s progress, the 54-year-old manager could only reflect on what might have been at Old Trafford.
“In the first half there were some good bits and some bad bits, but we gave the ball away a bit too cheaply,” Hughton told the club’s official website.
“If we would have gone in at half-time at 0-0, we would have been lifted by the scoreline and that should have been the case because we had a penalty given against us that was never a penalty. That gave Manchester United a lift, and then it’s the second goal that really hurt us. At 2-0 it becomes tougher, and they just showed how clinical they are.”
The Canaries will be playing in Manchester again this week, as they travel to the Etihad to face title contenders Manchester City on Saturday in the Premier League. Scottish midfielder Snodgrass is expected to be a doubt for the trip.
